When we plan to stay in a city longer-term (for more than a few days), we often consider getting an apartment for lodging instead of a hotel room, for example through Airbnb or Booking.com. When travel plans are uncertain, such as due to a global pandemic, we prefer to leverage more flexible options in terms of cancellation, in which case we tend to steer away from Airbnb with its usually restrictive cancellation policies.
When staying longer in a location, such as a few to several weeks, the per-day cost of an apartment can be cheaper than that of a hotel. Further, accommodations discounts are often offered for longer-term stays, regardless of lodging type. Apartments can also be more cost-effective than hotels because you can prepare your own meals instead of needing to eat out.
With these and other considerations in mind, we have created the following list of amenities that we tend to look for when searching for a longer-term apartment in a city to which we are traveling. These are our own personal preferences, but it’s probable that you’ll also find many of these fit your tastes.
- Microwave (unless there’s an oven)
